My Visit to Franklin Elementary

I had a great time today talking to all the children at Franklin Elementary School!  There was  a police dog there too, and he was a sniffer.  His job was to sniff out gasoline, and his partner did a demonstration.  He put lots of rags around, but only one had a little bit of gas on it.  Then the police dog sniffed all the rags.  When he found the rag with the gas on it, he went very still.  He wouldn’t move no matter what the officer did.  It was cool!!  When it was my turn to talk, I asked the children what other sorts of jobs dogs have.  They had some great ideas such as guide dogs and firehouse dogs.  One little girl said that dogs help soldiers in the military too.  I asked them if they watched the news about the tornado in Joplin, and if they had noticed all the dogs.  I told them that the dogs could sniff out people under all that rubble so that they could be rescued.  Then I told them the story about the little girl who was very allergic to peanuts and couldn’t leave her house or go to school because she would die if she came even close to a peanut.  She got a special dog whose job was to sniff peanuts, and he would bark and warn the little girl if there were any peanuts in the area.  Now she can go to school and go shopping because she knows her dog will protect her.  Isn’t that cool?  I bet you didn’t know we were so smart!  Here’s some pictures of me and the kids.  One of the teachers said I was gorgeous!

My next gig is at Christ the King Day Camp on June 21st.  Talk to you later!

My Visit to Arkansas Baptist Elementary School

Have you missed me?  I bet you thought I got blown away or floated away in a row boat!  It’s been a slow couple of months because my little sister, Ms. Ellie, hurt her neck and Mom had to carry her everywhere for a while.  She had to stay in a cage (Ms.Ellie, not Mom) and was only allowed out to go to the potty.  Mom or Dad had to carry her down the stairs outside, then carry her back up again.  She got peanut butter three times a day, and I think that’s what made her well ‘cos she’s all better now.  Ms. Ellie is a senior dachshund and the vet says they have back and neck problems a lot.

Anyway, I’m back on my tour again, and today I went to Arkansas Baptist Elementary School in Little Rock.  I had a great time!  The kids collected some goodies for me to take to the shelter for my homeless friends.  These were first graders so we talked a lot about how to be safe around animals, especially dogs you don’t know.  There were lots of questions and interesting stories too.  Here’s some photos:

I love an ear scratch!

Look at me Mom!

My Visit to Baseline Elementary

That's funny--tell me another one!

Teacher's looking--behave!!

You smell good!

What's this gadget?

Read, read, read....and eat cookies!

Time to go. Thank you for the goodies!

Have you ever read the book “Because of Winn Dixie”?  The Afterschool Book Club at Baseline Elementary have, and then they decided they wanted to do something for the Humane Society of Pulaski County.  Isn’t that great?  They gave us a big box of food they had collected, including some homemade cookies which were yummy ( I tasted one, okay, it was two).  They also had a casual day and charged the students $1 to wear their regular clothes to school and raised $103!  What a great bunch of kids.  Mom tried to teach them about animal care and safety, but they already knew it all!

Here’s what the book is about.  I wish I could read.  Maybe Mom will buy it and read it to me:

The summer Opal and her father, the preacher, move to Naomi, Florida, Opal goes into the Winn-Dixie supermarket and comes out with a dog. A big, ugly, suffering dog with a sterling sense of humor. A dog she dubs Winn-Dixie. Because of Winn-Dixie, the preacher tells Opal ten things about her absent mother, one for each year Opal has been alive. Winn-Dixie is better at making friends than anyone Opal has ever known, and together they meet the local librarian, Miss Franny Block, who once fought off a bear with a copy of War and Peace. They meet Gloria Dump, who is nearly blind but sees with her heart, and Otis, an ex-con who sets the animals in his pet shop loose after hours, then lulls them with his guitar. Opal spends all that sweet summer collecting stories about her new friends, and thinking about her mother. But because of Winn-Dixie or perhaps because she has grown, Opal learns to let go, just a little, and that friendship-and forgiveness-can sneak up on you like a sudden summer storm.

Mom told them a little bit about the shelter and how important it is to adopt or rescue a pet instead of buying one from a pet shop or breeder.  Most of the children already had pets of their own and told us stories about them.  Lots of people wanted to take me home, but Mom said no ‘cos she loves me too much!!

Next month I’m going to the Arkansas State Hospital to talk to the teenagers there.  I’m looking forward to it!

Talk to you later!

My Visit to Chicot Elementary

We got up bright and early this morning and went to Chicot Elementary in Little Rock  to talk to some little people about animal care.  Their teacher said they had been learning how to take care of animals in class, but they needed an expert on the subject–me!  As usual, I was a big hit.  I did a show and tell with some of the things that I need–my water bowl, food, brush, a toy, and a collar with my name and phone number on it.  Then I did my rounds and mingled with the crowd, always on the lookout for Graham cracker crumbs and Cheerios which are usually quite plentiful when the short people are around.  Here’s some pics of me and my new friends!

That's my tail!

Aren't I handsome?

That's the spot!

I smell Graham crackers on your fingers!

Just checking in with Mom

It's time for me to go home now. Bye!!

My next “gig” is at Baseline Elementary School next month.  Talk to you later!

Enough with the snow already!

My tummy is cold!

You can see my dilemma. My legs are short and my tummy gets very cold in the snow. I’m a good boy though and always go outside to do my “business.” My little sister Blossom is so tiny, she would disappear in the snow! It’s my job to keep her warm.

Keeping my little sister warm

Mom says that she has been reading on the HSPC Facebook page that there are animals left in the cold. That’s just not right. If you see an animal that has no shelter, please call your local animal services. There is a law that dogs must have shelter from the weather. People work very hard to get these laws passed, so let’s use ’em!!!

Stay warm, and keep your critters warm too!

Poor Puppies :(

Puppies getting some oxygen

My mom told me a sad story. Three puppies were brought into the shelter yesterday who had been left out in the cold. Their momma had died 3 days ago. They were so cold they were blue, so Doctor Medlock warmed them up with a heating pad and a hair dryer so they would be warm. After they got warm, they got some nice milk from a bottle and everyone thought they would be okay. But Mom told me this morning that they died. I’m so sad for those little puppies who were left out in the cold. I wish they had a nice home where they were loved and warm, like me. It’s so cold outside. Please remember to make sure your furry friends have a nice warm and dry place to live. We have feelings too! Oh, and Mom says to spay or neuter your pet so things like this don’t happen. I’m not quite sure what that means, but you can Google it.

Stay Warm!!

My Visit to Roberts Elementary School

Here’s the photos I promised. This is me visiting with the pre K children at Roberts Elementary School in Little Rock. They are learning all about pet care, so I told them how important it is to make sure pets are kept happy and healthy, like me. We talked about keeping warm (it was 11F this morning!!), good food, water that isn’t frozen, and lots of love and attention. As you can see, I got plenty of love and attention!

I’ve got another school visit next week and will keep you updated.

Later!

Merry Christmas Everybody!!

Merry Christmas to all my friends!! I hope you have a wonderful day with lots of goodies to eat and presents to chew. I know a lot of you were worried about me after my last blog–the wasabi pea incident–but you’ll be pleased to hear that there were no after effects at all. Mom says I’ve got a cast iron stomach!

Have a great day tomorrow. Stay comfy and warm, and don’t eat too much!!!

Lots of love and Christmas kisses,
